Biography:

William E. (Bill) Murphy is a fifth generation Saugertiesian.  He and his wife, Dana, are active in local sports and have dedicated many years of service to the youth of Saugerties.  Bill has been the commissioner of the S.A.A. youth basketball leagues since 1989, and he has coached both youth basketball and adult softball teams as well as AYSO soccer. Bill has been a  member of the S.A.A. Board of Directors since 1991. Bill was elected to the Saugerties Sports Hall of Fame in 2016.  Bill has also been a member of the Better Community Housing Board since 2012.

His wife Dana teaches at Riccardi Elementary School, and competes in summer softball leagues and coaches ASYO soccer as well as being secretary of the Cahill PTA.  Bill and Dana live with their two daughters – Jaclyn and Jillian – in the Village of Saugerties.

Bill has been employed by IBM Corporation since 1996, most recently as a Software Contracts Administrator. Prior to joining IBM, he spent 10 years working for the Town of Saugerties with the Park and Recreation Department.

Bill is a 1983 graduate of Saugerties High School, and he holds a BS degree in Business and Finance from the College of Saint Rose.

Village Government Tenure

Bill Murphy was first elected to the Village  Board in 2003, and reelected in 2005, 2007 and 2009.  As a Village board member, he was Parks and Buildings liaison from 2003 to 2005 and liaison to the Water Department and Wastewater Department from January 2016 until he became Mayor. 

On April 5, 2010, the Saugerties Village Board voted unanimously to have Bill replace Mayor Robert A. Yerick, who had retired from office back on February 1st, 2010.  He has been reelected 7 times since -- in 2011, 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019, 2021 and 2023.

Responsibilities:

As Mayor, Bill is responsible for executive and administrative activities for the Village of Saugerties. The Mayor is responsible to ensure the enforcement of all laws and ordinances; to meet twice a month with the Village Board; to report on and review Village conditions; and to recommend enactment of new government matters when necessary.

Bill is also the liaison to the Revolving Loan Committee.
